WHAT IS THE UNIVERSE
THE ORIGIN
The Big Bang theory, the currently most accepted theory regarding the origin of the Universe, suggests that the Universe began about 12 to 14 billion years ago and is still expanding. The Solar System is 4.6 billion years old and Earth is 4.543 billion years old.
The Universe contains space filled with matter. This matter forms various masses, creating objects within itself. We know from physics that mass and energy are inter-convertible and that energy, according to Newtonian physics, can never be created or destroyed. Thus the Universal energy forms all living and non-living objects by condensation.
“If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the Universe.”
- Carl Sagan
The Universe has infinite energy or force and all the objects within the Universe derive their energy from it, just like the Earth derives its energy from the radiant heat of the Sun and the geothermal force within its layers below the crust. The exact origin of the first life-forms is still elusive.
Nothing happens by accident in the Universe. All religions and schools of philosophy agree that events within the Universe follow logical pattern and seem preordained on the basis of the mass and energy of Universal objects and their interplay. They also agree that the Universal Energy empowers all life on Earth and religion teaches that the way to invest the energy in our thoughts, words and deeds in a way that helps us connect with the Universe in the best possible way.
“You are the Universe, Expressing itself as a human for a while”
-Eckhart Tolle
ENERGY
“Energy is liberated matter; matter is energy waiting to happen.”
- Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything
The life-forms on Earth derive their energy from the Sun directly and from the Earth’s resources. Man-made objects such as machines and instruments derive energy ultimately from fossil fuels on the Earth, a part of the Universe. Energy is ubiquitous, interchangeable, transferable, and is perceptible to us only when it produces a result that can be perceived by our eyes, nose, ears, tongue, or skin. Religion recognized that energy is the driving force of the Universe long before science did. Descriptions of Universal energy exist in ancient Chinese and Korean religion, the Shinto religion of Japan, the Hindu religion that originated in India, Islam, and Christianity.
REALITY, PROOF, EVIDENCE AND TIME
“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”
- Albert Einstein
Reality changes dramatically with passage of time and is relative in nature. There was a time when science and religion believed that the Earth was flat. Scientific inventions such as the telephone, airplanes, mobile phones and computers could never been imagined until someone conceived the idea of their invention and the Universe gave them the power to realize their dream inventions. Likewise, the discovery of radioactivity and electromagnetic energy, and so many other discoveries and inventions.
Regardless of the progress we have made, there is probably much about the Universe we still cannot perceive, simply due to the limitations of human perception, even with the use of telescopes, microscopes, satellites and unmanned spacecraft. Hence, it is possible that the way we perceive the Universe is an illusion created by the limitation of our senses and whatever we use to aid them; however it is practical to accept what we perceive as the reality, so that we function in a sane manner in our earthly life, but at the same time, remain aware of the limitations of our perception.
Likewise, proof and evidence are largely second-hand, based on study and research by others. While these are unavoidable to live our daily life, our personal interaction with the Universe and its objects is first-hand evidence – hence, our own life’s experiences represent the extra connection the Universe provides us. We just need to trust it more.
Again, time is a concept created for day-to-day functioning in the world; in a dimensionless Universe, position, direction and distance are only relative in nature and destiny is simply the sum of events throughout the life-span of an object.
BIRTH, DEATH AND CONNECTION WITH OTHER OBJECTS
Birth and death are exchanges of energy between mass objects with the Universe; a living being forms when energy is condensed into mass and death occurs when energy ceases to be produced within the body of the living being and the mass is then returned to the Universe as energy over a period of time.
In human beings, the body is the mass that condensed from the Universal Energy, using the body of another for gestation and development. The soul is just the life-energy that pervades every part of the body and interacts with everything and everyone in our environment.
Since our body and soul are both derived from Universal Energy and since all other objects – living and non-living – on Earth and in the Universe are also derived from the Universal Energy, there is a direct connection between us and the forces and energies of other objects in the Universe
